Oral B 3000 vs 5000 [Dentist’s Favorite]

Electric toothbrushes can do a better job of removing plaques, and features like built-in timers are great for helping you adopt good oral health habits. However, it can be challenging to find the right toothbrush with so many products on the market.

As a busy general family dentist – I get asked for electric toothbrush recommendations all the time. The best toothbrush? The one you like to use! With that said – I do have favorites and love to share the best recommendations with people.

Let’s take a closer look at two popular products from Oral-B, Oral B Pro 3000 vs. 5000. (Hint: I prefer the 5000 – but the 3000 is a solid brush)

Which One Do We Recommend?

Comparing the Oral B 3000 vs 5000. [Both are good, but I prefer the 5000]

Both electric toothbrushes belong to the SmartSeries line and share similar features, such as Bluetooth connectivity or the pressure sensor that tells you when you’re brushing too hard.

There is a difference in pricing, with the Oral B Pro 5000 being sometimes slighlty more expensive.

However, we think this difference is justified since it comes with a travel case and has two additional cleaning modes.

Overall, we recommend the Oral B Pro 5000. The additional features are interesting and value add.

Key Differences

No massive differences stand out when comparing Oral B Pro 3000 vs. 5000 other than the additional brushing modes. Some of the minor differences you should know about include the following:

  • The design is similar, but the 5000 model has a handle that is a little thicker and longer.
  • The battery life is slightly longer for the Oral B 5000. You’ll get 40 minutes of battery life, while you’ll have to recharge the 3000 model after 28 minutes of use.
  • Both brushes come with the Daily Clean Plus, Gum Care, and Sensitive modes. The 5000 model has two additional modes, Whitening and Deep Clean.
  • The Oral B Pro 5000 comes with a travel case. It justifies the price difference and keeps the bristles clean when you travel.
  • If you purchase one of these toothbrushes on Amazon, you’ll get a 3D brush head with the 5000 model and a cross-action brush head with the 3000 brush. However, you’ll have to replace the brush head after three months by choosing any one of Oral-B’s options.
  • While the 5000 model only comes in white, the black edition of the Oral B Pro 3000 looks very sleek and modern.

Oral B Pro 3000 vs. 5000: Detailed Comparison

The 3000 and 5000 toothbrushes are both great options if you’re looking for an affordable electric brush from a well-known brand. Let’s explore what they have in common and where they differ.

If you don’t brush enough, you can end up with plaque and stain on the teeth. (Or end up with stinky tooth decay)

What the Oral B Pro 3000 and 5000 Have in Common

These two toothbrushes share three brushing modes:

  • The Daily Clean Plus is great for regular cleaning.
  • The Gum Care option will massage your gums.
  • The Sensitive mode is ideal for those with sensitive teeth and gums.

The base for charging the toothbrush is also the same. Both chargers have a built-in storage compartment for four replacement heads. The base charges the brush via induction, and you can track the battery status thanks to an indicator on both toothbrushes. On average, it takes 12 to 18 hours to fully charge the brush in both cases.

Both models are part of the SmartSeries line with Bluetooth connectivity. You can download the Oral-B app on your phone, and your toothbrush will send data to this app. You’ll be able to see your brushing score, see if you brushed all your teeth, and keep track of bleeding, among other features. You can also earn achievements by brushing regularly!

A great feature both toothbrushes share is the pressure sensor. This sensor will light up if you’re pushing too hard when brushing. Brushing too hard can cause damage to your enamel. It can even cause your gums to recede.

Like most electric toothbrushes, the 3000 and 5000 brushes have a two-minute timer. Both brushes will vibrate every 30 seconds to let you know it’s time to move to a different section.

Lastly, both toothbrushes are waterproof. It’s an excellent feature for brushing in the shower and saving time!

Oral B Pro 3000 vs. 500: What’s Different?

There are a few things that differentiate the two brushes. Perhaps one of the following points may be the determining factor for you.

Design

Both brushes have a rubberized grip that prevents slipping, but the 3000 model is a little slimmer. It might be easier to hold for children and teens. The design of the battery indicator is also slightly different, but both indicators are easy to read.

A significant difference is that the 3000 model comes in black while the 5000 brush is only available in white.

Brushing Modes

The main difference between the two toothbrushes is that the 5000 model has two additional cleaning modes.

The Oral B Pro 5000 comes with a Whitening mode. You should know that any electric toothbrush can help whiten your teeth by removing surface stains caused by coffee, tea, wine, or smoking. In fact, studies suggest that electric toothbrushes do a better job of removing surface stains compared to traditional brushes.

The Whitening mode is a two minutes and 20 seconds cycle with high-intensity vibrations to polish your teeth. Because the 5000 brush vibrates faster and at a higher intensity when you select this mode, it can do a better job of removing surface stains.

You’ll also get a Deep Clean mode with this brush. It’s a longer cycle at three minutes instead of two. The brush will vibrate every 45 seconds to let you know you should move to the next quadrant, but the speed and intensity aren’t different from other cleaning modes.

  • Superior Clean and 100% Healthier Gums* *vs a regular manual toothbrush
  • Bluetooth communication provides real-time feedback on brushing habits
  • 3D cleaning action oscillates, rotates, and pulsates to break up plaque and remove more plaque along the gumline than a regular manual toothbrush
  • Pressure sensor lights up on brush and smartph1 if you brush too hard. 5 modes: Daily Clean, Gum Care, Sensitive, Whitening, and Deep Clean
  • To maintain the maximum battery capacity of the rechargeable battery, unplug the charging unit and fully discharge the handle with regular use at least every 6 months

Brush Heads

The Oral B Pro 5000 comes with a 3D brush head. This brush head can help you get better results when using the Whitening mode. The 3000 brush comes with a cross-action brush head, which is an excellent option for daily cleaning since the bristles can get into spots that are hard to reach.

The brush heads aren’t a significant difference since you have to replace them every three months. Oral-B offers a wide range of brush heads, and you can personalize your electric toothbrush by trying different heads.

Battery

Battery life is an area where the 5000 model performs better. Both brushes use a rechargeable Ni-MH battery, but the 5000 battery lasts an extra 12 minutes.

Travel Case

The Oral B Pro 5000 comes with a blue plastic travel case. It’s a convenient accessory for protecting your brush and keeping the bristles clean when you travel.

A dental hygiene career is rewarding and can be fun!

Pricing Comparison

The Oral B Pro 5000 costs around 10% more than the 3000 model. The price difference makes sense since it comes with a travel case, better battery life, and two additional cleaning modes.

Does One Brush Clean Better Than the Other?

It depends on the cleaning mode and brush head you use. The Whitening mode on the 5000 brush can clean better since you’ll get more intense vibrations. It’s an excellent option for stubborn plaque and noticeably stained teeth.

The Deep Clean mode doesn’t necessarily clean better since it’s just a longer cycle. You can get the same results by ignoring the two-minute timer on the 3000 model.

Conclusion

Oral-B is an excellent option if you’re on the market for an electric toothbrush. While the 3000 and 5000 brushes are similar, we recommend the Oral B Pro 5000 since this electric toothbrush comes with stellar battery life, a travel case, and two additional cleaning modes.
